CA IBR Fee Increase for 2025 – Avoid Payment Errors & Delays!

California medical providers take note! If you’re filing for Independent Bill Review (IBR) to dispute underpayments or denied reimbursements, the IBR filing fee has increased as of January 1, 2025.

Maximus Federal Services, which manages IBR for the California Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC), has raised the fee from $180 to $195. However, the CA DWC website and Form IBR-1 still show outdated amounts, which could lead to errors and processing delays.

What You Need to Know About the New IBR Filing Fee

If you believe a workers’ compensation claim has been underpaid, you must follow these steps:

Submit a Second Review appeal within 90 days of receiving the payer’s Explanation of Review (EOR).
If the Second Review appeal is denied, file for IBR within 30 days, including the new $195 filing fee.
If Maximus rules in your favor, the claims administrator must reimburse the full filing fee.

Avoid Delays – Submit the Correct IBR Filing Fee

Many providers rely on the CA DWC’s website, but it still lists the outdated $180 fee. Additionally, Form IBR-1 incorrectly states $335 as the required payment. If providers submit the wrong amount:
Their IBR request may be delayed or rejected
They may need to resubmit the request with the correct fee, increasing administrative work
Payments for disputed claims could take longer to process

How to Ensure a Smooth IBR Filing Process

Submit the correct $195 filing fee for all IBR requests
Use Maximus’ online portal, which reflects the correct amount
Stay updated on DWC announcements to avoid billing mistakes
